88 tbird runs poorly/not at all

car: 88 tbird 4cyl turbo 5 speed MT

I was driving down the road doing (car was running like it always does) about 35mph when I started to hear a clicking/scratching noise at about 1/4-3/4 sec intervals that sounded very metalic. It got more notisable as the engines RPMs rose and wernt depended on gear/speed. I was a mile away from home so I thought to look at it when I got there. I drove about 1-2 blocks further from when I noticed the noise, when the car just stalled on me.

I restarted it and it ran very poorly and pulled off the road and into a parking lot 15 yards away with much dificulty stalling out 4-5 times. I let the car sit for a few minuts and checked all the fluids, they were all fine. I restarted it and it started up at 1k rpm and steadly droped over 2-3 seconds to a stall.

I let it sit 8 hours or so and tried restarting it again and it idels now but only around 1k (normaly 1.5k). I havent tried driving it anywhere after pulling into the parking lot. The engine sounds very umm not smooth (I guessed a piston isnt outputing power/ firing etc, though im not car literate). I would think it would be a bad sparkplug (or rather hope?), but what was the noise right before the problems? and why did it come on so suddenly?

Any guesses as to the problem? They would be greatly apreciated

Okay, so now I read the rest of your post. Seized turbo??? I know little to nothing about the TC's, just enough about cars in general (MN12's) to be dangerous. Doesn't sound so much like a spun bearing unless you have little or no oil pressure, then that could open up a whole can of problems.

sounds like probably timing belt may have jumped and or tensioner coming apart (belt hitting plastic timing cover could make clicking/scratching noise and cause power loss) iwould check belt and tesioner then move to check turbo for bad bearings
