99 Civic EX Keyless R/R stereo question

My daughter wants to replace the stock stereo. I understand the keyless circuitry is in the stereo. Have read where some folks just stuff the old radio deep into the dash, so as to keep the keyless functional. If I do this, I would have to leave the antenna in the old unit, right? The signal enters the car through the antenna. So what would I do to get an antenna input to the new radio? Is there a splitter I can buy?
Maybe these problems are the reason I read some threads suggesting just get an aftermarket keyless control unit. Has anyone installed their on aftermarket unit and would suggest a brand?
Thanks

Re: 99 Civic EX Keyless R/R stereo question

the signal doesn't run through the antenna, it just runs through the radio for verification. stupid design i think, but hey, honda knows what they're doing. anyway, when you get an aftermarket head unit, you have to (well, you don't have but should) buy a installation harness and when you get that, wherever you buy it from, the person should ask if the car has keyless or not. you obviously tell him/her yes and then get the harness. all it does it keep the constant, switched, and ground wires going to the factory radio. and yes you just stuff that in the dash somewhere and off you go. good luck. have fun with your project.

Re: 99 Civic EX Keyless R/R stereo question

I'm not sure about that, but I'm sure that it doesn't utilize the radio antenna, it probably just uses the body or a certain part of the body (frame) as it's antenna. But don't quote me on that. Good Luck.
