Hey, I'm a newb to cars and I had the same problem on my 2002 3.4L Monte air filter. I noticed that there was a metal box with some wires on it connected to the tubing of the air intake. Well, I went to AutoZone and found out that was the "mass flow sensor box" which does exactly what the guy named it. It is connected to the computer chip and monitors how much air flow is coming in, and can mess up your cars performance severely if screwed up. Anyways, it's extremely restrictive on the tubing making it very hard to get out the filter, which I have yet to do on the stock system.

I don't know what you have, so I can't really help you, not that I know too much. But in your owner's manual there should be a description on how to change your air filter. So go check that. Unfortunately, mine didn't include the mass air flow sensor that came from the manufacturer.

Re: removing stupid air filter

theres a bolt next to the battery at the bottom of the box IIRC

And there is a MAF (mass air flow) honey cone like screen on it and AIT ( air intake temp) smaller plug like sensor!
