98' Jetta intermitent brake lights

I have a 98' Jetta and am having problems with my brake lights. They only work every once in a while. I just noticed on the drive home tonight and have not checked fuses or anything. But I thought I would see what any of you think could be cause this.

I tried stepping on the pedal numerous times while at a stop sign or stop light and it took about 5 quick press/releases to get them to come on, and once they were on I could press/release and they would work properly, but if I would drive for any length, the next time I would press the pedal, the lights failed again, until I 'pumped' the pedal once more. I also notices that my left turn signal started having issues every once in a while. Every once in a while it would start blinking fast like one of the bulbs was out, but then I would turn on the right turn signal and then turn the left back on and it would work properly again.

I'm totally confused on this one at present, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.
