Think of a air compressor. Without a tank , generally won't keep up with with the tool being used, so a tank (accomulator) is placed in line to store the pressure so it's there is pressure there when needed.
Now with a glove on your hand place your hand over the exhaust pipe and feel the pressure build. What you have is a 12-15' 3" diameter accomulator storing energy for the turbo.
If you want to take this further and have a turbo laying around, take a air hose with a nozzle and blow it onto the turbine blades and see what happens.
The difference being a compressor only has +- 3 cu in, where as the automotove engine has 50 to 100 times more volume than the compressor.
