Getting weary of my Rx-7 arriving.

Ok, I was cruising the automotive forums, and i was in the supra section to look at some times, some cars ,etc, and I came across a thread of how shitty rx7's are, overpriced, expensive to maintain, yada yada yada.

Is the rx-7 really that unreliable? Because I am getting my '93 rx in less then three days, has about 60 000 miles on it, and everyone is saying how crappy an rx7 is? Am i making a wrong move in buying this..? Or with some of those reliability upgrades, should the rotary engine hold up well?

Re: Getting weary of my Rx-7 arriving.

RX7s are not crappy cars at all. I don't mean this in a bad way, but how old are you? i really hope you make more than 30k a year, because 93 rx-7s do have problems, especially if you don't maintain them right. It's a fabulous car.... but you'll always be putting money into it, that's just how the car is. yeah, it's a huge flaw, but if you're willing to put up with it, and treat her right, she'll do the same for you. if you can, get a nice second gen Turbo II or something, those are more reliable. Even with reliability mods, a 3rd gen with 60k miles doesn't have more than 3 years before it'll need a rebuild, if that. i'm being very generous with that number. it's your call in the end. if you really want to learn about rotaries, owning one is the best way to do it, but again, i hope you have a good job to pay for stuff.

My schooling is paid for because i am a north american indian, so all i really need to pay for is my car.I cancelled my buy on an rx7, and am looking for a non turbo 93-98 supra! Sorry rx7 owners, but im too green for a car like this.

Well good luck with that, but i think you'd have more fun driving an RX-7. If you've got the extra money, get yourself a second gen rx, and take it to your local autocross track, and keep the non turbo supra to get the girls. hahaha.

i was going to tell him to buy the supra anyway.

Re: Getting weary of my Rx-7 arriving.

here's my two cents. I work at a auto body shop, jus for clean up though. the owner of the place owns a corvette, but his winter car is an 89 supra. Now he asked me take it out for a bit for a wash so I did. I didn't have the same joy driving that supra as I do driving my RX-7, the FC is the most comfortable car I've ever driven in. I personally liked it more than the supra.

Re: Getting weary of my Rx-7 arriving.

the supra's only advantage over the rx7 is the fact that the engine is bulletproof and can make tons of power off the stock block.

Re: Getting weary of my Rx-7 arriving.

For an individual that has limited funds and automotive knowledge / expertise, the Supra is a much easier car to live with than the 93 and newer RX7.

On the other hand, if you have a reliable beater to drive every day and can turn wrenches / diagnose problems, the 3rd gen RX7 is the way to go. It is like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Camaro Z28. Which is easier to live with every day, and which do you get more turned on about?

Yah dude its pretty sweet, I hold down a part time job at cgc (canadian gypsum company) at 21 bucks an hour, and my university tuition and my residence on the university campus is all paid for by the government (because of some treaty signed for native americans back in the 1800's saying we get free education, hunting, and no taxes) But yah I bought an all black 2jzgte 1994 toyota supra TT. 23 grand flat! Thats right kids, stay in school!
