93 bonneville AC electric clutch dead
I am having trouble charging R-12 into the AC system because the AC compressor electric clutch willnot engage. The electric clutch plug shows live 12 volt negative on one pin, and 0 volts positive on the other. I have jumpered the accumulator sensor and a sensor in the line down by the compressor (donot recall if this is on the low or high side line). All fuses (driver and passenger sides under dash and in engine compartment on fire wall) have checked full continuity with a Ohm Meter. The AC-Heat-Defrost switch contacts on the dash are not burnt and show continuity with a Ohm Meter. There has got to be another sensor that is open and it is probably under the dash next to the evaporator. I have even disconnected the battery for a half of an hour thinking this was computer related and I had to reset it. The electric clutch selonoid shows continuity using a Ohm Meter across the cable pins, thus the clutch selonoid appears to be okay. This AC system is manual temperature control and not automatic. There's got to be an easy way to charge this AC system using the compressor to suck R-12 in on the low side. It would make my day if the AC compressor electric clutch would start spinning before my very eyes. Someone out there please slap me up the side of the head with a solution before summer is over with.
07/21/05 Guess what gang, I accidently found the solution to the problem. Even though the A/C electric clutch relay had a good coil, it had burnt contacts. I jumpered wire the contacts on the relay plug and the electric clutch energized. HURRAY!!! I have air conditioning. I cut open the relay case to inspect the contacts and found the same burnt. I went ahead and dumped nearly 2 pounds of R-12 freon into the system and now it is fully charged. Now I have to get me another relay, install the same, and begin to enjoy the hot - humid summer.
