Coolant change q's
Agh! Im back from being on operations, and I realised after the fact that my old man added coolant because he noticed the bottle was a bit low. Unfortunatly, he added GREEN coolant! He meant well.
So this is 3 months after that fact.. Now I know I need to flush out the coolant, but the question is, how and with what? Or is ot ok together? I have heard that the mix causes gelling. Howie |

Re: Coolant change q's
It probably didn't hurt anything but a normal flush will work. The best method to get EVERYTHING out requires removing the thermostat so that the system is free flowing.
First drain as much as you can out. Obviously this is going to mean opening the radiator drain. You also will want to get the two block drains. There is one on both sides of the engine. The front is next to the oil filter, the back is about a mirror image to the front IIRC. With as muched drained as you can and the t-stat removed, seal everythiing back up. Remove the upper radiator hose and attach a garden hose to it. You can find an adapter kit at most auto part stores desiged to do just this. Turn on the hose and let it run a while. This backflushes the system and ultimately pushes everything out the top of the radiator. It's not exactly a dry process so you'll want to do this outside and not in a garage. Or you can just take your to a shop and ask for a flush. Make sure it's a real flush and not just a drain and refill as well over 1/2 the system won't drain normally. |
