Did you get any information on this issue. I am having the same problem. When I first start it, it runs about 3 mins and then shuts off. When I try to turn it back on the light comes on then shuts off.

Re: defroster turning off after 3 minutes

behind (and part of) the switch is a timer. some makes use a thermal timer. you switch it on and a bi-metal element is heated inside a module behind the switch. after 10 minutes or so, about the time your windows are mostly clear, it reaches a certain temp and the bi-metal element moves due to the differing expansion rates of the two metals, opening the circuit and shutting off the rear defroster grid. you can hit the button again but because the element is still heated, it won't stay on. it would take 10 min or so to cool off. who knows why these things suddenly decide to go into a short-cycle. bad batch of bi-metal elements or a vibration moved something around inside the switch. i've heard that some makes use a digital time. in any event, head over to your favorite auto parts store and see how much they'll nick you for the timer switch. replacing it should be a cinch.
