Thinking about getting exhaust???

I was just wondering if anybody has thoughts/opinions about exhaust systems for my 1999 4.0 2-door sport 4x4? The only performance upgrade on my truck is the K&N CAI that actually gave me a little more pep and MPG(about .5-1 MPG). If I add a cat-back exhaust system, I think it would get better MPG, add horses and torque, and give it a little growl. I talked to a well respected guy who runs Performance Exhaust (I work at a dealership and we know all kinds of specialists) and he quoted my $250 plus tax for Magnaflow cat-back and is even going to extend the pipe to make the sound a little more mellow and hide the tailpipe so that I don't have a huge 3inch tip out the back. I'm just not a fan of big chrome tips on most SUVs. Does anybody have Magnaflow or know if it will be worth my money?? Thanks

Re: Thinking about getting exhaust???

magna flow is a good mufler well worth the price, We put it on my husbands 2.0, 4 cyl. mazda and it picked up quite a bit. We didn't change the size of pipe. We put a flow master on my V6 Explorer and I enjoy that one. You will always increase pwr, mpg, and get a harty growl if you go bigger than stock pipe, because you have opened up the air flow more.

I had the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust put on this week and it really surprised me on my gas mileage. I went from 15.6mpg to 16.8mpg after I installed the K&N FIPK (cold air intake), now I got 21.26mpg (highway) after the Cat-back was installed. I could also tell a differnce in the takeoff speeds and overall power. The shop I took my truck to put on a 3inch pipe and made it a little longer than normal to make it quieter and also put on a longer muffler than he originally wanted to because I told him "the quieter the better" since I only have a v6. It sounds deep and mean when I take off, but at idle it is barely louder than stock. I like it a lot better that way for some reason. I recommend this setup to anyone who wants power and better MPG, but not the super loud sound. Plus, this setup was fairly inexpensive.

Re: Thinking about getting exhaust???

I am glad you are happy with it. You cannot really hear mine at an idle unless you are by the tail pipe and it has a low grumble. It is when I step into it You can hear it. I love the K&N systems, I had to wait until my warranty expired so I am going to be putting it on soon. They claime the K&N the oil to recharge the filter with sucks into the motor and it would have voided my warranty. They have great oil filters also that are close to the same price and frams.
