Manually shifting transmission, Ok or Not?

I was recently looking at my orignal window sticker or whatever that lists the options of the car and under the GTP options list it said "driver selectable shift". Does that mean I can manually shift my transmission through the gears without hurting it. If that's not what it means, then can I shift my car manually to have a little fun or will it hurt my transmission and how bad. Thanks for the input.

What year is your GTP? Every now and then for the past 7 years, I manually shift depending on the situation and the tranny is still working fine.

I had a 95 with over 500,000 k on it and downshifted for the life of the car and never had any problem with it.
And the same with my 99gt 200,000 k no problems yet (touch head).
I drive allot of country roads hi speed to stop signs and it definitely saves the brakes and gives me a shorter stopping distance.
I get mixed opinions on this one some people say never and others say its ok.
As far as gearing up goes I can't seem to do that any better that the cars doing it already.
