Well obviously I have D – 2 – 1 as it is a 3 speed. I would take a picture for you but my digital is out at our lake cabin with my wife and kid for the week. Perhaps next Monday if you like ?

Since 95 there have only been 2 types of automatic transmissions used. The one used in 95 was a 3 speed fluid controlled transmission, with no overdrive. The other was the Getrag 4 speed automatic, electrontic controlled, 3 gears plus one over drive gear. Thats it.

IF your gear box says D-2-1 then you have the 3 speed transmission, if it says D-3-2-1 then you have the 4 speed transmission. Theres no other exceptions. And trying to count the times a transmission shifts to determine its gears is extremly unreliable. ITs even dumber that you think you have a 4 speed and that you counted the times it shifts. If your excellerating at WOT, the car will never go into overdrive before redlining. If your not excellerating at WOT the car still wont go into 4th gear unless your excellerating very slowly, and then you will never know if it skipped a gear.

If you have a 95 then you have the 3 speed automatic, and thats it.

Jason perhaps we are getting lost in the terminology. In summary would you agree, using a consistent naming scheme that people regardless of years between 95 and 99 is all I know for sure you could buy a cavalier with the following transmission configurations:

5 Speed Manual (This one is easy)
3 Speed Automatic
4 Speed Automatic (the 3 speed with the overdrive coupler at the end of the transmission)

FYI GM labels their transmissions at retail as 3 speed auto and 4 speed auto.

So when you said things like “no its a 4 speed automatic, why would GM use 2 different types of automatic transmissions? They didnt, you have a 3 speed with over drive”

You were just plain Wrong. I don’t have overdrive on my 99 dumbass.

And when you were slagging on Mr. Finalturismo “uhh 95's came with the 3 speed automatic” you may be able to hide behind the 4 speed is really a 3speed with overdrive bullshit but most people will see through it. At least keep some dignity and admit you were wrong and spreading mis information on this board. You can independently verify from many web resources that cav’s come with 3 or 4 speed autos for those years.

That wasn't very nice.

You seem to have forgotten my warning. If I have to remind you again you will get quite a vacation.

In all fairness, Jayson was just offering polite insight, he never got rude whatsoever. He gave quality argument, and for that was called a "dumbass" and insulted. Were it me I would have retaliated with more than "ricer".

Not to argue with our moderator's fine judgment, I just think the blame finger might have been pointed at the wrong guy. And I'm sorry if I'm overstepping my bounds, I just thought it needed to be said. :-D

It is truly unfortunate how things ended up. What annoys me to no end is when people post inaccurate information. I have no problem getting corrected when warranted that is what forums are about learning new information. I do not ever mean to get into a fire fight I believe that I backed up my arguments with facts and links and even possible photos. I guess my problem is that when I read a post with misinformation I will post a correction. On this particular form it usually deteriorates quite rapidly into name calling and serious denial of the truth. In the future I will PM inaccuracies and hope that the poster will edit their posts.

Regards,
Michael
