I was in the same situation. If she's a good a friend as you say then things won't get weird or funny if you ask her out and she says no.
I asked a girl I was friends with out and she said she just wanted to say friends but our friendship got stronger. So don't worry on any negatives there are only positives. If she says no, so what, you two will forget about it and keep going. She says yes, hey, you're banging your best friend, what luck.

the guy who makes the most sttempts gets laid the most so go for it. if you dont go for it then it wont happen and you will never forgive yourself it happened to me when i was younger and stupid. if i could go back i would have gone for that girl and as someone else said id probablly be married or damn close to it
