BP and Mobil both sell 98 octane fuel, but its the same stuff. In fact all the fuel sold in NZ by Caltex, Shell, Mobil, BP and Challange is exatly the same. Dont listen to what anyone tells you, it comes from the same refinerys, is delievered in the same tankers, and is stored in the same storage tanks. The only differnce is differnt trucks deliver it to differnt service stations.

Gull however uses a mixture of what ever it can find, but most of it comes from Australia, you know the same fuel that caused Subaru to fit all the WRX's with differnt ECU's and lower boost becasue they were detonating so badly.


Anyone who thinks that BP petrol is better than Shell petrol is a misinformed fool.

However, fuel quality can vary between station to station. Becuase of the long distances its trucked around NZ in UNSEALED trucks the 96 and 98 octane fuels often lose a few octane points due to evaporation of some the fuel additives. Same thing happens when its delivered. Its a fact that in Winter NZ fuels will show a slightly higher average octane rating than in summer.
Also a station with high turn over and small tanks so its always getting freash fuel will have the best quality fuel, while the old country station with water filled tanks and deliverys once a month should be avoided.






There are two differnt ways of rating a fuels tendancy to combust. and many differnt ways of measuring it.

RON is the most common, and MON is the most acurate. (funny that the oil companys use RON and not MON). Ill be damn'd if I can remember what the differnce is, but a quick search should find the answers for you.
