Welp, I got into an argument today with a kid about the effectiveness of putting a "chip" into your car. I stopped arguing however because I did not know enough about them.
Now, I was arguing about cars like my ex, and his sissy jetta gl. Now, I was under the impression that you needed to have some modification done to your car for a chip to be effective. Especially the fuel system and stuff correct? And, also on such a low horsepower cars it would not do too much. So, yeah, could somebody inform me about htis, I do not wanna be "that guy" who argued when I was actually dead wrong. If there is an FAQ or something about this, could somebody direct me there. I could not find one.

chip[ping a honda may not be worth it, but i know that when you chip a vw car that has turbo (ie a GTI) it gives mad power.... my manager at work has a chipped gti and it hauls.

![]() Ive seen some chips that can get yah 50hp... of course thats in a twin turbo car but still... ive even seen single turb chips knock up 35hp without adding any boost. But a good engine management system and properly tuning would get you the same effect I would imagine!

I was being a sarcastic ass =) For a honda, chips [ECU replacements] become useful when you replace your valvetrain and have performance items that make your powerband go beyond what it used to. For example: the intake manifold I put on my car makes peak power up higher, probably moved from 7600 to about 7900. Also, they come with remapped fuel curves. But you can get the same effect by dyno-tuning a VAFC.
Someone I know threw a chip in his A6 Turbo Quattro, raised his boost and remapped the fuel... gained about 40hp. It all depends on the application, but for the most part, Honda people don't need chips unless they are going all-out race.

A chip can be very useful to an N/A car. They make chips to best suit your mods, no you will not get a huge gain unless you have more mods. But for like a Civic EX you can get the vtec kick in set to like 4800 instead of 5800 which will give you an edge over the rest, because you get your potential HP sooner. Therefore making things such as your 1/4 times fast because you are in vtec for 2400 rpm instead of 1400. Yes you can also get you full map changed and your rev. limiter higher.

Lowering your vtec engaugement that much is a horrible idea! It screws up your backpressure and your engine wasn't meant for the vtec to engauge so soon. If anything, you want to raise your vtec a few hundred RPM's along with raising your rev limiter.... That'll make more power than lowering your VTEC engaugement.... VTEC is a high-rpm system... start messing with it too much and you'll get negative effects. Ideally, just leave the bastard alone.
