Question about shop manuals etc.

Hello,I just purchased a 69 VW Beetle sedan and was wondering if you guys could recommend some good shop manuals for my VW.I have been looking on ebay and I'm watching a few to bid on them. This is my first Volkswagen so I will need all the help I can get. This VW has the autostick. Is this a good transaxle or bad.Does it hurt fuel economy and what kind of milage could I expect to get?Thank's for any advice and help that you can give me. Re: Question about shop manuals etc.

Jon Miur's "Idiot Book" is priceless, in addition the Rober Bently manual had everything I needed. The autostick is good for people who do not want to shift, but they can not handle any extra horsepower so if you want to increase performance at all the autostick is not, in my opinion, a good choice. I have never tried the conversion to 4-speed so I don't know how involved that is. As far as milage, the way you drive will effect mileage more than the type of transaxle. I've heard the autostick gets slightly better milage, if it's in good condition.

Good luck,
Brett

Bentley Service Manual. 1966 to 1969 manual is blue. It has a full chapter on the autostick.

For the basics, get the Haynes Manual. VW Beetle & Ghia 1954-1979. P/N 96008. Avaiable at any Auto Parts store. If not they can order one.

That, the Bently and Muir are all you need. Muir is especially good for Karma and entertaining reading, but I wouldn't rely on it too much for technical info. The other 2 are much better.
