Unhappy 2002 Blazer Gas Mileage

Just bought a 2002 Blazer. 26K miles. It gets horrible gas mileage. I know they dont get good gas mileage, but this is rediculous. I drove 11 miles yesterday and my gas gauge went down two lines. I always keep it in 2 wheel drive, I'm not using the air conditioner, and I don't drive like a maniac. There is no smell of fuel and it runs great, except for sometimes when I first start driving it, it sounds like the engine is really racing (very loud) when I'm hardly pressing the accelerator, but then it goes away and it quiets right down after getting it going. Once I shifted into 4 wheel drive (electronic 4X4) I didn't hear anything, am I supposed to...could it be stuck in 4 wheel drive? What else can I try. I don't expect great gas mileage from my new blazer, but I'd like to get more than 10 MPG.

I was just reading around the forum on my problem. It's seems that the Blazer's now are set up to have a 5 gallon or so reserve so you don't run it completely out of fuel and burn up the fuel pump motor. How valid is this?

Re: 2002 Blazer Gas Mileage

Not sure about the fuel consumption as I drove from dead center of upstate NY to Miami FL(around 1600 miles) and only had to fill up my tank 4 or 5 times(and that was leaving with a full tank, not letting it get on E before filling up, and ending with about 1/2 tank). I also have a 2002 4.3 but mine is 2WD only. As for the loudness in first, mine does the same, so does everyother 02 that I've been in. My blazer almost has 60K on it and it runs great just like the day I bought it. I'd check to make sure you're ingector's are running properly and that you are running on all cylinders. Peace-

Re: 2002 Blazer Gas Mileage

Also, many a friend's that have had Chevy's claim that their gas gauges burn out rather quickly, or do not work correctly(i.e. that could be why it when down "2 lines" over 11 miles). Peace-

How many miles are you getting to a full tank before you fill up? I would suggest picking up some Chevron fuel injector cleaner and putting two bottles in and filling with super. If that doesn't make a difference you may need a full tune up. Oh and the whining on a blazer is normal, the fuel pump does that, when it gets really really loud it usually means the fuel filter is clogged.

Re: 2002 Blazer Gas Mileage

I have a 2002 4wd 4dr Blazer that gets about 16 mpg. The loud noise you hear is the fan clutch and it is normal. It has an 18 gal tank and the low fuel light comes on when there are 5 gals. left.

Re: 2002 Blazer Gas Mileage

Don't go by the fuel gauge when figuring fuel economy.

Fill it up, drive it till empty noting the miles driven, fill it up and then note the gallons used.

miles driven/gallons used = MPG

The tank is not a linear measurement and should never be used for economy.

Also, the whoosing sound you are hearing is the fan clutch which is normal.

That is pretty good for the speed you were going.

If you want to save some money, keep you speed between 60-70mph maximum and you economy will jump up to over 21MPG rather easily.
