Up grade really = Bad gas milage?

since i am pretty new to this, i am not really sure if this has been discussed. I have a 3G Eclipse GS and the only mod i have right now is a AEM V2 Intake. I really want to fix up my car performance/power more, but i don't really want to lose a lot of miles per gallon. I'm thinking adding a turbocharger or kit would would probably to do, but how about headers and an exhaust? With gas prices skyrocketing in Cali and all, i dont want to be pumping gas more often than not. So does fixing up your car necessarily = lower gas milage?

not always, such things as your intake system will generally increase gas mileage depending on your setup. a few mods to open up the breathing and let it all flow a little more shuold help gas mileage, but i dont know what a turbo or any sort of kit will do to your gas.

so if i just add an exhaust and header, my gas consumption will be pretty much about the same?

Re: Up grade really = Bad gas milage?

a short length header and cat-back should be better gas mileage

a long tube header won't help and may hurt and you'll need to tune your car

thats what i was told by another guy w/ short length hy-tech? headers

Re: Up grade really = Bad gas milage?

header, cat-back, and a new air filter shold improve your gas, it may not be a dramatic increase, but it shouldnt hurt, mainly depending on application and use. it also all depends on how it is driven, different styles return different results i have noticed from driving my own car, some day, i get great mileage, other days when i deive a little "too" fast, i wast a LOt of gas.

Re: Up grade really = Bad gas milage?

here's the info on the gas millage. when ever you make your engine "breath" better, you will use more gas to even out the extra air you're bringing into the engine. every mod with intake, exhaust will use extra gas. There a catch though, now that you get more power, you won't have to push the petal as far down anymore to get the power you're used to. therefore you're saving gas by not having to hold the throttle body open as long.
as for headers, if you aren't going to tune them in with an air/fuel computer, you're going to loss alot of gas in the top end. after you get them tuned in, it'll be close to where it was before for gas millage.

Re: Up grade really = Bad gas milage?

Turbo charging your 3g will not effect gas mileage unless you drive it hard. For example if u drive your eclipse on vaccume mode then its at its regular mpg. If your boosting around 2-4 psi then your only taking a little bit of mpg out. If your overboosting like around 10-14 psi then your screwing up your gas mileage real bad. Its also the same without turbo. It just depends on your driving habbit. Sometimes people mod their car and dont even tune it out. They usually just leave it the way it is and run too rich or too lean. The people who knows how to tune cars knows how to save gas because they adjusted it right so the car can run normal/fast without stressing out any parts.
