4T65-E whinning sound

I have a 1998 Olds Intrigue with 104,759 miles on it and for the last two years there has been a whinning sound coming from the transmission. This noise only occurs when the transmission is out of gear like when I put it in park or in neutral. The noise goes away when the transmission is in reverse, or in any of the drive positions. Is there anyone that has this problem or know anything about the problem. Thank Rick!

Re: 4T65-E whinning sound

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 98 Intrigues had the 4T60 trans. I know that the 4T65-E's could be coming apart when they start whining. They have a tendency to break a needle bearing which will eventually cause a sun gear/planet set failure. Seeing as how you've had this problem for 2 years you may have a different issue. Why not drop the trans pan and replace the filter. If the trans is coming apart you'll probably see a lot of metal chips / flakes in the pan.

Re: 4T65-E whinning sound

Hey Panzer, as long as you have access to Alldata why don't you pull up #03-07-30-017 for the folks, I'd also like to know if it's been updated since 5/7/2003. This is the one that really scares the crap out of me. I have a 2002.

Re: Re: 4T65-E whinning sound

Whenever I post these, the pictures never post so the information is better than what I am showing. I really like alldata and would also recommend the GM manual also (which I don't have).

I love my 4T65E and typically shift it manually using 4th as an overdrive. In 2nd it will go about 70-80mph to redline (maybe even 90mph) with taller than stock tires (same size tire just more rubber -BFG control plus 65k-80k mile rubber type -good in Wisconsin snow also when new ). I also downshift the transmission when slowing down. So I don't take it easy on mine. Runs as smooth as it ever was also.

I only use 2nd when accelerating onto the highway etc. Never on the highway to pass etc. Brake, off-brake, then Downshift into 2nd maybe at 30-40mph if you want, brake again. Downshift into 3rd (no brake) when passing on highway using 4th as an OverDrive only. By using 2nd for acceleration you will be as fast as 95% of the cars out there. This may not work as well with the 3.8L engine. There are a lot of performance sedans out there now and it's fun to embarrass a brand new Maxima or 3.5L Altima once in awhile, even Auroras with the 4L V8. Kind of embarrassing when a 5K used-car lot Oldsmobile will beat a 35K$ brand new car. Geez I thought my car was supposed to be fast? --Well I guess it's not?

Some kids know that the 3.5L is fast. I use my car as a sleeper. 2 kids had their parents 3.5L out and were cruising kind of fast. They went past me at 50 mph at a 35mph road. I kept close enough behind them to get to the on ramp. I downshifted to 2nd from 3rd and started the on ramp turn at 40 in 2nd. I was on their bumper at 60mph and passed them going 75-80 at least still going uphill. Having nice hard rubber like the BFG really helps, but it's soft enough/aggressive (tread) to still get stick. The BFG tires are also way quieter than stock and little(if any) of that rear wheel (bopping-shudder) noise is evident. People drive 70 mph on the highway typically around here. I also get 75 mph at 2K rpm in 4th (OD) also for good highway cruising economy. I also use Mobile1 5W-30 Synthetic motor oil (Mobile 1 or Amsoil synthetic only Castrol Syntec and others are cracked regular oils (to get smaller molecule size)and not true synthetics).
