Re: Taking private property for public use

You should be allowed to live in any buildings built on your where your house was. The thought of my ugly mug in sporting goods should keep them away from my house.

Mine isn't any better - I was surprised to find out years ago that gov’t here had the power to expropriate property. In Toronto in the late 90’s the city (or province??) wanted to build a new square right in the downtown heart. Business owners who had always thrived along the targeted city block had no desire to leave but in the end their land was expropriated from them, leveled, and turned into a square. The business owners were apparently given “fair market value” for their land but that was little consolation - they were sitting on the most primo retail locations in the country (any idiot opening up any kind of shop there could make a killing). It really made me think back then and this story just makes me wonder again how I would feel if I were legally or politically forced to give up my property.

I think I'd go firebomb the new project again and again in the middle of the night, maybe even burn down the homes of the people who voted to expropriate my land in the first place.
