Idle low, sometimes stalls

My 2000 Mazda 626 is idling very slow and sometimes stalls while sitting there. The check engine light is on, so i took it to my local autozone to have the code read. The guy told me the fule was running rich/lean and it is most likely the O2 Sensor. I wanted more help so I got motortrends PC auto diagnostic program. The info I got from the program that it could be the "idle air bypass vavle".

The car will stay running if I slightly press the gas pedal, and like I said doesn't stall all the time. Can anyone tell me what they think this problem could be. Is it the O2 sensor or IAV. Any info would be nice, thank you.

Talking

I've found a fix to 626 performance problems that may help. I had a lean error code and my 4 cyl was dong the hesitation thing when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. I had run 3 tanks of injector cleanor with little improvement.

$60 for diagnostics told me I needed a MAF sensor. Here's my fix;

- Dsiconnect negative side of battery
- Get a T20 "tamper proof" torx bit - $2.99 at Autozone
- Disconnect the leads and remove the MAF - it's located between the air filter and the throttle body. Be careful - this is an instrument.
- Get a good magnefying glass and inspect the device. You'll see two litle sensors soldered to posts. Make sure the sensors are clean. Mine were all cruded up.
- If dirty, spray litely and then blow dry with compressed air (gently). Check it again and repeat the cleaning if necessary.
- Check the conections to the little posts. Are they still attached? Yes - good!
- Reassemble & hook up leads - gently again.
- Reconnect battery cable.
- Drive off into the sunset with a smile on your face. You just saved 400 clams.

the o2 sensor is a good bet. bought one for a nissan for about $30 and it wasn't too bad to install. likely need a special slotted socket to remove/install o2 sensor.

do you have the trouble code that was causing the check engine light? this would help. autozone or a competitor would probably give it to you.
