97 jetta stock radio "safe" mode?

someone gave me a 97 jetta.

it has the stock disc changer and head unit. the previous owner told me they locked it with some code you punch into the 6 memory buttons on the head unit face. they forgot the code. how do i unlock it?

Call a VW dealer with your VIN number and they can look it up.

My dealer told me they have to have the stereo's number as well, meaning they had to pull it. Cost $43.

pull your radio out and get the numbers yourself and see if they will give you the code. I doubt it but try it. I had to take my 98 back to get the code for the radio. you can make your own radio puller out of a wire hanger cut 2 pieces about 8 inches long and bend them in a U then slide in about 1 inch to the radio and push them to the side windows and pull the radio should pop out.
