96 Accord Auto - Speedo failure
Now I know there's been many post on this topic, but none really seemed to completely answer the issue. I think there should be a sticky with this topic, as it seems fairly common.
My girlfriend's 96 Honda Accord LX Auto, with 111000k on it seems to be having a lot of problems lately. The most recent issue is her speedometer, it started out that it would sit at 20mph when the car is cold, then 5-10 minutes in, when the car warmed up, it would spring to life and report the correct speed. It gradually got worse and worse until now it very rarely comes to life. We did notice however that when the car is parked in the sun, the speedometer is much more likely to work. Not sure how heat could effect it, but it does. So sifting through this forum I've come to conclusion that I need to do these things: (1) Check to see if cruise control works ------|=== If cruise control works then it's most likely the speedometer ------|---- that is having the problem. ------|=== If cruise control doesn't work then the problem could be the ------|---- VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and that they are simple to ------|---- replace. Now my questions: (1) Where -exactly- is the VSS located? (2) If the speedometer is indeed bad, then how do I go about fixing it, and is there a way to fix it without messing the mileage up? So far I fixed all the other problems on her car, and for the most part I know my way around cars. I replaced her driver side drive axle, fixed her passenger power window, replace that stupid underskirt, etc, etc. Now to this, as the mileage is no longer tracking, it's fairly important. Thanks for any help, I would like to clear up the confusion on this topic for me and others. Thanks. |

Where is the VSS :(
OK you got a 96 Honda Accord and I got a 95 accord EX and we're both trying to find the dang VSS. I bought myself a new VSS for about $50 after S/H and my problem is finding the VSS to replace.
I looked at several manuals and sites and they all say it's on the passenger side and on the back side of the transmission. I tried looking for it yesterday under the car and found nothing after 1.5 hrs of searching. I wonder if it's hidden behind something. I do believe there is a cable that links to the VSS and that it's known to corrode over the years. The two locations for the VSS is either behind the Transmission facing the rear of the car or on the passenger side transaxle. Can someone please let me know when they find the damn thing because I've looked everywhere. Thanks. |

Re: 96 Accord Auto - Speedo failure
Don't know if yours will be the same, being that it is newer, but I posted links on how to replace it a couple minutes ago in the thread related to the blinking 'S' light. That shows where it is on 90-93s...so perhaps that will help.
