Good Priced Motors

im wondering what are some good places that have good prices on motors. i am looking for any thing from a 1776 to a 2275. also i know that i would have to replace the fuel lines, what do you suggest i go with flexible, hardline and what width??? also do you suggest a turnkey or longblock. this is the first motor in my bug besides the original and i dont know much about bugs so any information you bugaholics have is greatly apprecitated.

Don't rely strictly on price. If a rebuilt or new-built engine is selling for around what the parts cost by themselves, then you can be sure shortcuts were taken.

Find a few suppliers and get prices, warranty and other info from them for what you want. Then check back here for opinions on the suppliers. Some are very good and some really suck.

As far as size of engine, that all depends what you want it for.

If you want a dependable daily driver with better than stock power, that will last 75-100,000 miles, go for the 1776cc. If you just want it for Saturday nights to blow ricers away but only about 20,000 miles, then a larger engine would be the ticket.

You can get dependability and long life OR power, speed and quickness. But not both.

ok i have decided on the 1775 or 1835. i was looking at quality german auto parts but i was told that they are pricey also strictly foreign but they want even more than quality german auto parts. i was told that karls customs in phoenix, arizona has really good prices. does anyone know good places for a 1775 or anything up to a 1835???

I know someone who is selling a bug with a 2.1 liter engine for like 800 all it needs is carbs. where are u located?

i am in Prescott, Arizona. A 2.1 liter, is it a flat four or something else??

its a four cylinder just bored out to 2100cc engine its in California. if ur interested i can probably get the engine for around 700

Karls customs is a great place to go. I just recently picked up a 63 ragtop and have pretty much only been going there for my parts. They have some good deals and just about anything you need, plus the people there are cool. They do have some long blocks for sale or im pretty sure they would be able to build an engine to what you want for a pretty reasonable price.

Call RUss at Oldspeed in Paramount, CA THey do awesome work, they're featured in the mags all the time, Russ is a great guy and will give you the break down depending on what preice/quality you want to go... They build a 1776 for me 5yrs ago, and it's still running strong. 110cam dual 40 webbers turn key. Turn key is way sweeter, you'll enjoy it more, cause you won't have to hastle with all the rest. I'd go 1776 with a 120 cam for more HP, and they also have a turbo kit for 1776's WITH HEATER.. they have a kit for that, and it'll make your 1776 run like a small 2liter.

"Turn Key" when discussing VW engines, is one that you don't have to do anything to to run it. Basically just bolt it in and drive.

You may have to install exhaust and clutch/pressure plate, but other than that it's complete and ready to go.

This is as opposed to a long block that you need to install manifold, carb, fan, shroud, tin, gen, etc or short block that needs all of the above plus heads, pistons, jugs, push rods/tubes, etc.
