weird tranny issue

today my 94 sunbird ran out off gas, so after i put a couple bucks in it were it ran out i started it and went to put it into drive, and nothing happened, the shifter would just slide loose through the gears as if the shifter was not hooked up to anything. can anyone help me out with this. thanks.

There are two possibilities. 1. The shifter cable broke and will not engage the transmission or 2. the selector inside the transmission broke when you put it in park and will need to be replaced. Hopefully no. 1 applies as the second option can be quite expensive. Good Luck!
