Engine Type?

Hello, I know this is my first post on here, so I figured that I'd better make it a newbie post, right? Haha.

Anyway, I was curious as to what engine type I have. I know there's like three different types for a 1996 Sable, but how do you tell which one you have? I'm clueless!

Thanks for the help!

-Steven

Re: Engine Type?

Hello. There were actually only 2 engines available for the Sable in '96: The '96 Taurus SHO came with a 3.4L Yamaha V8 but there was never a Sable equivalent. The 3.0 Vulcan has been around for a very long time in the Taurus/Sable and is, in fact, the only engine to be offered in 2006 with the Taurus as Ford retires the Taurus. I believe the last year for the 3.8L V6 (Essex) was '95, and it was replaced with the 3.0 Duratec in '96.

Go out to your car (or look at your documentation) and find your vehicle identification number (VIN). One location of the VIN is on the dash underneath the very front of the windshield on the driver's side. The engine code is the 8th VIN digit:

Vin U: 3.0 OHV V6 145hp (Vulcan)
Vin S: 3.0 DOHC V6 200hp (Duratec)

Let us know if you have any other questions.
