98 Jetta GLS Window Regulator Qestion?

Hi I have a 98 Jetta GLS the drivers side Window regulator went bad and purchased a new one from local supplier. Put it in but the window wont go up because there is to much friction or force on the window (it goes half way up then goes back down) could someone please direct me to some directions on how to install the regulator D/S Front. I'm almost thinking that I have to have the window up and shimmed in place then attach the reghulator brackets to the glass and then it will guide itself right and true in the track. PLease help I'm going Bonkers here trying
