what does chipping actually do?
does it just raise boost? adjust fuel? or does it let the computer use the boost without throwing a cel? cant i get just the same results from a fpr and a mbc?

it makes the turbo run higher boost, it also raises the redline and makes your engine have more power by reajusting it to the setting the chip wants.

How Performance Chip Works
A year ago I asked the same question about how the performance chip works. So I asked this question to a guy named Ron Price from PES-Tuning, and here is his answer:
The GIAC ECU Chip for your Audi achieves its 50-55hp gain by raising the turbos boost pressure from 8 pounds to 16 pounds, plus allowing increases in timing and fuel delivery. The chip is soldered into your cars ecu replacing the stock chip. The only time a check engine light would appear is if an engine malfunction had occured, the chip alone will not cause a cel.
