1995 Jetta, Weak engine

I have a problem with a 1995 Jetta where the engine loses power any time the car is starting to go from a stop or is going uphill. Also, the cars a stick shift and sometimes loses a lot of power when shifting gears. When it idles, the engine cuts out sometimes The check engine light has been on for a while. The car was taken to a mechanic, who said that the O2 sensor was broken and replaced it. The problem is still there. Anybody with advice or that has run into this before would help a lot.

take it to autozone and have them scan it and tell you what the problem is or the codes than come back and post them. also what engine is in it, the mileage. has it had a tune up? new plugs, rotor, cap, airfilter. after the O2 sensor was replaced was the light still on or was it off? has the car been modified?
