I've heard of a lot of people using flow master 40 series mufflers with 3.0Ls. They're louder than the 50 series. A muffler won't give you much more performance. You will probably need JBA headers. I didn't want a flowmaster after reading this:

http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Miscella...austtheory.htm
According to the flowbench, two of the best flowing units you can buy are the Walker Dyno Max and the Cyclone Sonic. They even slightly out flow the straight through designs from HKS and GReddy BL series. Amongst the worst, are the Thrush Turbo and Flow Master mufflers. We'll flow some of the newer mufflers as they become available at our local Chief auto.

I myself have pace setter headers, no catalytic converter, and a Dynomax Super Turbo dual outlet muffler on an 88 2.9L with a big cam and mass air flow.

I'll tell you right now, a V6 will never sound like a V8, but my 2.9L turns a lot of heads. I always get asked what's under the hood, you should see their eyes when I tell them it's a 2.9L V6. It rumbles and sounds like it's ready to destory some rice burners. Given it's displacement, I wasn't really after the low v8 raspy sound, I was more for the rumbling/mean sound.
