'01 MC SS - Whining sound when turning

I've noticed a high pitched whine when turning. This sound is most often in the early morning when the car is first cranked and is loudest when turning to the left. I can barely discern any sound when turning to the right. Also, I noticed a similar sound when accelerating while the car is cold. I recently had to have the alternator replaced and was told the sound with acceleration could be the new accelerator charging the old battery. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Re: '01 MC SS - Whining sound when turning

Have you checked your power steering fluid? Low fluid will cause a whine when you turn the wheel. I don't know if they still call it rack & pinion, but watever they call it, I had a chevy years ago that the rack & pinion whold stick in the mornings at the first time I turned the wheels in the morning. Cylinder would create a ring inside and the piston would stick over night, causing a hard wheel turn in the morning. Sorry for the long reply. May be power steering rack & pinion going out. Good luck.

my 97 monte has a very slow tranny leak and it whines during turns when the fluid gets to be about a pint low, and like yours, it's most pronounced during left turns.
