96 Jetta 1582 1303 codes?

I am looking for anyone who might have some input on how to fix these codes.

1303 is maf/vaf input too high
1582 idle adaption at maxiumum

I tried to clear them but as soon as I restart the vehicle the codes come right back.I am not sure what the maf/vaf is.I asume that the 1582 is a idle speed control. That is an easy fix. just costly the other i have no idea about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The MAF is Mass Air Flow Sensor. It measures all the stuff about the air coming into the engine. If you have a bad PCV valve you may be getting oil on it. Do you have oil splatter on the air filter or in the black hose? The MAF is located directly behind the air filter box and has a wire coming off the back end of it.

boschmann posted the way to clean it is "Remove the sensor from the housing, two t-15 safety torx screws (a Vise-Grip can do it). Soak the whole thing in a jar of at least 90% rubbing alcohol, available at any pharmacy. Do not touch, brush or use elec contact cleaner. I've not had much luck with cleaning, unless there's been alot of oil in the intake pipes."

The bad MAF may be causing the other engine code. Try cleaning it and the throttle body. It may solve your problem. If not they are a bit on the pricy side you may want to do a Junkyard swap. Good Luck!

For the idle just tinker with the idle adjustment screw near the throttle body.

Het thanks for the advice. You were right the blowby just dirtied up the maf sensor and the throttle body. One can of carb spray later she passed with flying colors.I hate emissons testing in cali.

Took the car in the day after restting computer and it failed because all the computer functions hadn't reset.I had to wait 2 days and then take it back. so far so good no light on and car running great
