94 SSEi Transmission - signs of trouble
My transmission has been gradually deteriorating over the last 6 months. During the cold months, when cold starting, the transmission would take 20-30 secongs before engaging. Would not do that when warm or in warm weather. Now I have noticed the shifting of gears is soft and sometimes revs (slips) when accelerating hard. The fluid levels are fine. Any ideas what might be wrong? I want to keep this car if I can get the transmission repaired economically. Any thoughts on the cheapest way to go on this?

well it may be your synchros that are going, but you can always just get a new or rebuilt tranny, I think price is the only factor... how much are you willing to spend?

Re: Re: 94 SSEi Transmission - signs of trouble
Thanks for your post. I would like to keep the bill under $1000. If I could get out for $500 I would be ecstatic. I have put a lot of money into this car over the years and at some point I have to stop. I have 117,000 miles on the car, new engine and supercharger at 75,000. At the same time, I still like the way it drives/handles and because I have invested in the maintenance I really don't want to get rid of it. I will go with the low-cost option, if any, to keep my car on the road. Guess I am trying to determine what my options are. Thnks again.

Re: 94 SSEi Transmission - signs of trouble
well just an FYI for ya, most cars generally need a 60K, 120K, 180K mile etc... tune-up so you may have to look out for other things that go wrong as well, I'm sure you can find a rebuilt tranny somewhere for under 1 grand, but the problem is whether or not you can install it yourself, if not, start shoppin' around for a cheap mechanic, or a friend who might know how to do it, sorry I can't be of anymore help, but I'll start lookin' around online for ya.

4t60e-hd for 1994 from GM costs: $1843 for a GM Rebuild trans
It is 8 hours of labor x 70 bucks an hour = another $560 gets expensive if you go with a goodwrench trans Locally you could probably have a trans shop do it for $1500 |
