my honda struck a leak

I bought my 1994 accord lx off of my brother last year. it is currently at 120,000 miles, and in decent shape. yesterday though after driving around for about an hour, in the 94 degree weather I had my first problem.

I pulled into my brothers drive way, and as I turned off the car I heard a fan kick on and start running. He said this happened to him and it was from the radiator and when it happened he got a new thermometer and it fixed the problem. I was going to let it sit and cool down for about and hour, but before I got the chance to even go inside the house radiator fluid starting pouring out of the bottom of the car.

Does anybody know the problem/solution for this. I don't know If I have a hole, or if my enging was overheating due to the tough weather.

Re: my honda struck a leak

During hot weather, it is normal for the fan to kick on when you turn the engine off. It should run for a couple minutes and then turn off. There should not be any fluid from the radiator unless the pressure cap is weak or the overflow tank is overfilled or for some reason the hose to the overflow tank from the radiator came loose or sprung a leak. You need to find out where the fluid is coming from. As for the thermostat, if it were a problem, it would show up when driving the car. It would not reach temperature if it was stuck open or would overheat if it were stuck closed.

Thanks, I think thats what the problem could be then, I recently got new plugs and a few other additions, one of them being a new radiator cap. they did not have the original model, but had one that had a pressure release or something like that so that you could let it cool I think would be the reason for that.

I guess I will check the cap when I get home from work today and make sure it is on tight and make sure the seal is good.

Make sure the new cap didn't cut the transfer hose to the resevoir.
