86 cherokee major problems

Ok, where do I start. Rebuilt carb 6 months ago, but it was shabby at best. It died in November sometime and we just left it sit. Now, I'm trying to get it running again.

Installed new carb, but wouldn't start. Found out it wasn't getting fuel, so I installed new fuel pump. Still no fuel. Found a break in the rubber fuel line, replaced it. Now I'm getting fuel, and it starts.

Except, now it starts, runs real ragged, and won't idle at all. Tried adjusting the carb, but still the same. It sounded like it was missing, so I replaced all of the plugs, but still no difference.

What could the problem be? There is no computers or anything, it was a strip model, originally Forest Service. Could it be the timing or something?

It does start, but if you let off the gas, it dies. And it still sounds as if it's missing or something. It runs real rough.

Re: 86 cherokee major problems

It could be SOOO many things at this point. Start by baselining everything. Turn your mixture screw all the way in (don't tighten, just seat) and then out 2.5 turns. Set timing as close as you can and triple check all of your vac lines. Also, make sure that your plug wires are in the right sequence. If you haven't get rid of the gas that was in it and replace with fresh. Make sure that your base gasket is sealing properly as well. Spray water around it and see if the RPMs go up. If so, you have a leak.

Ok. I figured it out. The float in the carburetor wasnt attached to the needle. I'm gonna give these people a call. Anyway, the choke was also choking the engine too much. Fixed that. Now the Jeep runs great!!!! But now it's overheating during idle. Why???
