89 Camry Seat Belt Works When It Wants To

The automatic seat belt works when it feels like it I guess. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I assume this is the driver side belt. Did the belt work when you open the door at certain position?The possible cause is the wire got crimped due to the door open/close. You need to trace the wire and find the location of the crimp and solder the 2 ends together.

Also, these automatic seatbelts are supposed to only close when the door is closed. The car knows when the door is closed by a little rubber button in the door jam. If you can figure out how to take that rubber button off, I would try cleaning or sanding the metal contacts. Commonly they become slightly corroded from sparks or just naturally and the conductive parts of the metals no longer can make contact. I've had to clean all four of mine. After you're done cleanign/sanding, you may want to apply electric connection lubricant to give them a coating, this may help prevent further corrosion. Don't apply too much, because it may bridge across contacts when the door is closed, makign it think the door is open, I am not too sure if the lubricant is conductive.

Usually the buttons have a bolt underneath the rubber covering it. In the case of '94, I don't know if its the same, there rubber piece is oval, and one side covers the button, the other side is flat, if you lift the flat part it should expose the bolt.
