Check oil light

I recently bought a 1990 town car with 171(k) miles. Recently, the check oil light came on. There is enough oil and I do not hear any difference in the sound of the engine. There is no change in the engine temperature. Is there a fucntion where the check oil light comes on after so many miles for the oil change? Or, should I be looking for a sensor problem? I also do not have the maual to check this out.

Hi Bill..
Sounds like the sensor is bad. There's no function that calls the light on with mileage, or oil change intervals.

I've seen a few threads on bad Oil Pressure Sending Units lately with the early 90's TC's.

The sending unit's cheap so that would be the right place to start.

Worst case, you may have knocked a bunch of crap loose in the oil pan and partially blocked the oil pickup screen, that would be a serious problem so don't take too long taking measures to correct the problem.

Re: Check oil light

What is even more ineresting is that the warning light went off after I was parked for a while and has not come on again. Do you know where the oil pressure sensor is located? Also, I am going to take it to get the oil changed this weekend. Should I have them flush the system? It appears that I have a small leak as I can smell oil burning after a trip of 50 miles or so. Based on the strings I have read so far, this appears to be a common issue. Will an oil additive help or is something like Slick 50 better?

Honestly Bill...
I can't be much help with the details on the 1990.

The 1996 Oil Pressure sensor is mounted directly onto the Oil Filter adapter block. We both have a 4.6 so I would guess yours and mine are in the same place

As for your other questions try these guys. They've tried just about everything imaginable with the early 90's TC's

He has a 1990 so it is a 5.0l OHV engine, which is quite different. Also 1990 actually had a "Check Oil" message that was in the cluster. The 1991+ 4.6l cars no longer have this.

I'd imagine that the sensor is fouled.
