Cooling Fan Help

Need help on what the hell i need to get/what the hell it's called. The wires ran from the cooling fans to the little bix infrint of the batter. My fans do not work, they don't come on automatically like there suppose to. Actually they don't come on at all. I got the drivers side one rigged so when i turn the fan on in the car, the fan comes on immediately. So i figure the wires to the fan, possibly that little box aswell, are burnt out, needs replacing. What am i looking for and is that all i need to do, just replace it or do i have more problems than what i just posted?

Re: Cooling Fan Help

See my thread 'stumped' in problem diagnosis.

Chased my cooling fan problem around randomly since last October! Finally reolved over this weekend.

Naw, it's all stock. Just that the wiring seems to be f*****. Guy said the car needed TLC and he wasn't lying about that.

Eh huh, mine was, "it would be a cool toy to play with". I have more unidentifiable wrires under my dash than I know what to do with. Even both power feeds for the raido were spliced together into the fuse feed because some lazy schmuck didn't take 2 seconds to realize when they went on a mad wire chopping spree the battery hot feed fell down into the bottom of the console. Felt great when I found it! Just got me all juiced up with energy.

Tell me about it.. alot wiring in my dash is f***** too. The radio was a nightmare, wires were crossed and open, the copper touching metal, blew the damn speakers, fixed that and the radio works now. I can't get the memory to work though, everytime i shut down the car it reset everything, some wires in the ignition must be screwy. Horn doesn't work either, and it's also a trans am steering wheel, with the big bird in the middle.

If it keeps resetting when you turn off the car, it doesn't have a constant "hot" wire that it should. Most stereo's have two power wires going to it, a 12v power from the battery that has power even when the car is off, and another 12v power from the ignition switch, that way your radio won't stay on when you shut the car off, and the other constant power wire will allow it to keep memory.

If the wiring is as screwed up as your saying, I'd just run a fused wire off the battery for the constant power.

p.s. normally the red power wire is the constant hot, and the yellow is the 12v ignition wire.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

i would replace the relay, and the temperature switch on the driver side of the block. either one will cause the problem youre talking about. although they should still come on if you turn your air conditioning on.

Thats why i new something was wrong with them, because when i turn the ac on, they never came on, until i ran a hot wire to one of the ac wires near the firewall, and got one of them to work. 89, is the relay near battery? I followed the wires off the fan some of them ran into this box near the battery.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

Did you try grounding the fan switch lead, pass. side head between 6 & 8? Seems that it's the main culpret being so close to the exhaust man. the wires get brittle, much like the guage switch on the drivers side.

I wasn't so fortunate having an 85, no such switch, all ECM control. Ended up being a rash a grounding issues on the back drivers side head, hands are still ahlf numb 4 days later.

My relay was on the right side radiator post, but I've heard later models have it back on the firewall with the MAF relay(s) and f/p relay.

Re: Cooling Fan Help

the box you are talking about is a power distribution block, its just a bolt with 12v on it that you screw wires down onto for sourse power.

Do you have a test light? if so, now that im awake, it sounds more like a power or ground problem. so check your power and ground circuits to track the problem. Also if you have a multimeter you can test the power wire from that distribution block to the fan, and see if the wire is broken causing your problem.
