Tach gauge problems
Hi, hopefully someone can help me out here. My G/f's 1995 Accord V6 tach gauge has a mind of its own. it jumps up and down from 0rpms to 2000 rpms on its own, the engine is not effected... i know she's brought the car to the dealer and they said it was due to a coolant leak,( which was promptly fixed) but it came back that night. Has anyone else experienced this, or have some ideas of what it could be? I'm not famaliar with Hondas, but any knowledge will help. thanks

Re: Tach gauge problems
Well, I probably can't help much, as I don't know too much specifics of Hondas either.
I suppose you can assume since it runs OK that it's not a problem in the tach reference signal, or the PCM would be going bonkers. So that would leave wiring, connectors or gauge trouble. Sounds typical of a dirty connector or bad ground. You'd have to try to follow the tach signal wire from the distributor (I assume) to the dash harness and see if you can spot a bad connector. Oddly enough, I had a roomate who's Dodge Daytona did the exact same thing many years ago, it was out of warrantee, but she took it to the dealer, as nobody else (including me) could find a reason for it. $85 later, they said they couldn't find it either. But when we went to leave, the car wouldn't start. I found the negative battery cable end was cracked, and wouldn't tighten up. I replaced it and the car started up fine, but oddly enough, the tach problem dissappeared for good also. I suppose the subtle changes in system amperage caused by the faulty ground were enough to throw off the precision of the tach's transducer that moves the needle. That's my guess, and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Tach gauge problems
A COOLANT leak? Man, who suggested that? The janitor who sweeps up the oil-dri at the end of the day?

I was figuring either a sensor or some type of bad connection anyways, I'll see if i can take a look for some cracked or broken wires at least.... since it doens't seem to effect performance. I have no clue what they were thinking when they said a coolant leak as the cause... that didn't fit well with me at all... someone must have been around too many exhaust fumes that day
