Use Dealer for changing timing belt?
It is time for my timing belt to be changed. I have a few questions.
1.What else should be changed while this is being done? 2. Should I use the dealer or mechanics that are x-honda dealer mechanics? The dealer wants $689 or so for timing belts, balance belts water pump, coolant and accessories(?). Then another $389 to service the car. I got the car with 80,000 miles on it and all I have ever done was change oil, filters and plugs. The dealer spoke of ac filters and other things. They said they have a check list of things that I can mark off for the things that I do myself. The x-honda dealer mechanics will do the whole job for $620.00. Wondering if I should not take a chance with x-honda dealer mechanics or just let honda do the whole job but $1,050.00 or so is a large chunk of $$. The x-mechanics have their own shop and all they work on is hondas and they are certified. I know that Honda would be good about backing their work. Thanks in advance for your advice. |

Re: Use Dealer for changing timing belt?
If they are honda certified, they know how to do it all. Even if a mechanic isn't honda certified...it's not like things are drastically different in a Honda. Any mechanic with half a brain should be able to handle a tuneup. I'd definantly go with the cheaper of the 2. I avoid dealerships like the plague because they overcharge like this, and then basically go overboard with what all needs to be done. They don't 'fix'....they replace. Hope that answers your question.
O yeah, the main things that need to be done are the belts and waterpump. If plugs and wires were done recently, then htey should be good. You want to have the filters you havn't changed...changed. So whatever you havn't done semi recently: air/oil/fuel filters. Chances are you did your oil and air filters recently enough...if you do your own stuff. Yeah, the mechanic should know what is needed in the 90k tuneup.

Re: Use Dealer for changing timing belt?
Agree. I only go to dealer for warranty work. They will do their best to squeeze your money out of your pocket. Find an honest and reliable mechanic is the most important.
