umm, what bike, what year? as a general rule of thumb slow, you will feel left out meerly trying to merge onto the hwy.

Re: how fast is a 500cc bike?
My first bike was a GS500E (1991 was the year) and it was a GREAT bike! You can smoke TONS of stuff. A LOT of riding is in the rider, not the bike!
![]() ANY size bike is big enough to do some damage to yourself. Just remember that the size of the motor just changes how fast you CAN go, not how fast you HAVE to go to kill yourself. Sad, but true.

Re: how fast is a 500cc bike?
I would'nt recomend getting anything smaller than a 600cc. I have seen it a hundred times, you will get bored real quick. if you are afraid of the power pratice makes perfect. It wont be much heavier than a 500. And if it is the ride height then you can lower a 600 for under 200 dollars

ok. point made but i started on a 250 and went to go to a 600 as a second bike and found not much of a difference. i'm over 6 foot so size is an issue but i would not recommend anyone start on a powerful 600. an older 600 like the fzr range or an early cbr would be max. power to weight comes into it. an old 600 is quite a bit heavier than a, say, 98 ZX2R and the 250 would be easier to manouver with more features associated with liter bikes. USD forks for starters

Re: how fast is a 500cc bike?
I have also rode a 250, and I think that it is weak! It dosent take too much time to learn to ride and that means you will have a bike with LOW resale value, and possibly a payment on a bike that you are bored with.
I started on a 97 Bandit 600 and was bored with in a year of owning the bike. My F4i is much more fun and it is also a 600cc I wouldnt let my wife get a Ninja 250. I wouldnt let her get anything below a 600cc, ecause I know in a matter of months she will be wanting a bigger bike |

Re: how fast is a 500cc bike?
P.S. Not much of a difference? The Ninja 250 raps out at about 65 mph. I havent ever reached my f4i's top speed. pluss red line is @ 14000 RPM's

Are you sure you've ridden Ninja 250?
. It tops out around 100 mph (actual speed). 250's acceleration is weak compared to 600 cc obviously, but it is still faster than most cars on the road. So it's relative and gives enough chance for a new rider to make mistakes and go fast. And I don't know how it's over there, but in Florida, Ninja 250s have very good resale value, more so than any other bikes I've seen, newbies are always waiting lined up for someone else to sell theirs. Also Aussie learned on FZR250RR, their 250s (notice the RRs in the end), supposedly gives it more power, lol. But it's true, for some reason, 250s over there are faster than Ninja 250 here. In straight roads, acceleration is based on how much a person can handle, but on curves, it really doesn't matter.

I have seen those things rail, and rail quickly. Yes, the bike has limitations - all bikes do. The Ninja 250 fills a void in the market for new riders who want to learn and others who don't want anything more than the bike has to offer. In fact, I have a friend looking for one right now.

Re: how fast is a 500cc bike?
well that is just my advice and opnion. I HATE 250 and 500's but I am a pretty BIG guy 6ft. 4in 250 lbs. that does'nt flap in the wind I found it weak. but I was already a well seasoned rider

try a CBR250RR, ZXR250RR or the FZR250RR.
all redline at 19000rpm and are the highest power output 250's bar 2 strokes. all 4 cylinder, not twins. once wound up your bandit would have trouble getting away. my old man has a 650 cagiva. i can walk faster. just because its over 500cc's doesn't make it fast
