primering my 240

hey, i have a 90 240 i'm trying to primer. well, i was told to sand an area down with 220 paper removing all the clearcoat. i did that, painted it, and the paint wipes right off. i even washed it thoroulgy before applying the paint. then i took a 4" paint remover wheel or whatever and removed some more top coat iwth that, same results, then i took and removed all the paint to bare metal.. painted, and the paint sticks, but u can see the marks from wheel of the grinder. ne ways, should i just try a courser sand paper, like 60 grit or something on the top coat, i really dont' wanan have to take my whole car down to metal. The problem could b too i might have used the wrong kinda primer, there was primer for 2 bucks, and some for 4.. of couse, i bought a can of the cheap stuff to try.. ne thoughts would b great, thanks,steve

nice decision! mines primer. hehe. anyways i dont remember what sandpaper we used but i dont think you want to take it down to the metal. it was just a fat ass roll of circular pads of sand paper that my friend got from the shop where his dad works. they stick onto the end of a air powered rotary tool and thats how we did it took forever. i had black paint but it was fucked up in hella spots so we just primered it. and basically it looks gray when you sand it enough. like really scratched up but not metal. we hit metal in a few spots on the hood which had been repainted like 9 times. that took forever to go through all those coats. and you want to get the expensive primer the cheap stuff only lasts like 9 months. its called catalyzed primer i think is what you want.

if you can see the scratches from the sandpaper... use a finer one to get rid of it... also using an air powered buffer is sometimes over doing it... that's why you get deep gorges from the grit.

finishing it up with wetsanding (by hand) is common practice isn't it?? i don't know ... tha'ts what i thought.

Use really rough paper to take the paint off, then a little smoother paper to take the marks off, then primer, then sand with a like 400 to 800 grit, then paint a few coats, then wetsand with like 1500-2000 grit paper and then clear coat it and see how it looks then

hmm okay. i'm guessing its a combination of using 220 gritt sandpaper and cheap primer i got from walmart.. so i gues i'll try and use a nastier grit, maybe like 60-80? and some good primer.. where might i find like good primer. an auto parts store maybe? and another thing, what exactly am i looking for, as far as sanding goes, just removing the clear coat? thanks alot, i'm a newb to this kinda thing..

Shoudl prolly have just left it alone....

I highly doubt you need 60-80 grit. 220 will prolly do just fine. Primer is supposed to stick to metal and such. Thats what its for. It sticks well to bare metal and such so paint will stick to it.

Ok here. Wet sand your whole car by hand with 400 or 320 grit. Or if you have already sanded the whole thing with 220, go over it by hand or with the DA with 320 and feather edge the spots that you went down to bare metal. Always hold the DA flat. Then you should be ok to tape it up and primer. I don't know how bad it is already though or what you have done to it so far, but hopefully this will help.

why the fuck would you wetsand your car when you are just primering it. its only fucking primer jesus. wait im assuming you want it primer right? this is not just your first stage of paint? wetsanding is for like absolutely clean glossy immaculate show winning paint jobs. this is P R I M E R

You wetsand the primer to give it a smooth looking finish. Even though he is just spraying it primer, I am sure that he wants it to be smooth instead of rough and gritty.

well, this time i tried 60 grit, scratched up the paint, and had success this time. i used a different kind of primer and did a few coats. then when it dried, i wet sanded with 400 very lightly, the highest i have right know. It turned out pretty good i'd say, pretty even but still a lil ruff, i need to wet sand again with something finer, but other than that, i think the results where pretty good.

If all you want to do is primer your car and have no paint at all, you dont need to sand really. Just use a scuff pad over your existing paint. No sanding is needed. Scuff pad roughs up the surface basically just taking off the clear coat(to a certain extent), your car will not shine thats when you know your done scuffing. Also when scuffing use scuff stuff (or whatever the place sells) it's a gritty like goo that helps in scuffing, it also cleans the surface. Then wash the car and let dry. Then you spray the primer over. Let it dry and bounce out. Iv primered my car alot. Every little scratch, just respray. You dont sand the primer unless your going to repaint. If your not going to repaint do not sand the primer....its pointless. Good primer can be found at a automotive store. I payed about 130 for a gallon of black and the hardener. Mixing details should be on the can. Or just ask the guy's at the store and they should help you. I baked it in the booth just so i could get home and not have to wait for it to dry. I primered my whole car (except the roof) in about a half hour. SHould take you two seconds. Now, the reason your primer is all lumpy and gritty is because you got cheap ass wallmart spray can shit.

and a good hardener to use is DP90, it has more catalysts and shit in it.
