1987 Camry Idling Rough

I have a 4 cyl. 1987 Camry that idles very rough while in gear (automatic transmission). It almost sounds like it wants to cut off when I stop at a stoplight. The RPM's seem to fluctuate up and down while in park. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Try checking hoses for looseness or cracks, may have vacuum leak.

Read the engine error code see if there is anything detected by the computer. Start from there.

You can try cleaning the throttle body. It's an easy DIY project. There are some good instructions on this site. Do a search for "throttle body cleaning".

Brian R. posted this link in another post. It gives a good pictoral description on throttle body cleaning and should help you.
