1990 sierra a/c clutch

i was minding my own businees , just driving down the road. went to make a left hand turn and a bad squeaking sound started. my air was on.when i turned the air off the noise stopped.the air was no longer cool.. plus any time i turn my a/c on that noise starts.does that sound like the clutch went out?i need some info before i drop a bundle on a comp.
