bad oil leak (not rear main seal)

i have just purchased a 1989 jeep cherokee with a 4.0. i bought it knowing it had a bad oil leak coming from what seemed to be a rear main seal. last night i pulled the oil pan and installed a new rear main seal and oil pan gasket. while i was doing this i noticed that the pan gasket and seal looked fairly new. evidently someone had just done this repair and it hadnt worked for them either. after i finished replacing the seal and gasket it leaked just as much as it had before. i wiped every thing down to se exactly where the oil is coming from. it appears to be coming from the bell housing where the torque converter is located. is there another seal up there where the transmission conects to the engine that could be leaking? it is definitely engine oil and it just sits there and drips even when the engine is not running. any help is appreciated.

Re: bad oil leak (not rear main seal)

Depends on where it's engine oil or transmission oil.

Check your valve cover gasket. If it's leaking in the back, oil can run down the back of the bell housing.

the o-ring to the oil filter housing has been known to cause some bad leaks too!

oil leak

I had a pretty bad leak which I thought was coming from the seal, but was actually coming from the under side of the oil pump. There is a cap of some sort, that was loose check that. as soon as I tightened that the leak went away.
