1996 GTI 8v 2.0 Power loss

I have been experiencing power loss problems with my GTI for the last few months.

At first I was unable to get the engine to rev beyond 4000 rpm. and there was extreme power loss above 2500 rpm. accompanied with faultering/spluttering. I took it to the garage which has reqularly serviced the car. Based on the fault codes they replaced the catalytic converter, and that mass airflow sensor.

Since this work I have noticed a marginal improvement but still suffer with the power loss and spluttering.

I have changed the fuel filter and intorduced injector cleaning fluid to the fuel. All with no affect.

Has anyone got any further suggestions???

Distributor cap, rotor, plugs replaced along with HT leads within the last year.

Not touched the timing belt and tensioner, but will investigate.

The local garage has suggested that there is a potential problem with the injectors. As the MAF sensor reports operating fully open for a period (suggesting that engine has to run rich to compensate for an issue??).

Thanx for assistance. Will get back to you on the timming belt thing.

Anyother suggestions??

Re: Re: 1996 GTI 8v 2.0 Power loss

The air screen inside the air box below the air filter might be clogged. Cleaning it cleared a P1128 error code in my VW that initially seemed like a bad MAF and/or O2 sensor. My VW's pickup improved significantly afterwords. Hope this helps. Cheap fix if it works.

Thumbs up

Fixed!!

The problem got so bad, that the car was undrivable.

We put in a new MAF Sensor, and hey presto all is now ok.

It appears that some new parts are not new. If the code on the box is followed by an X then it is liklely to be a refurbished part.

I can only assume that the sensor whihc was replaced some time ago has always been faulty.

Thanx for your advice and help.
