Smile Just some quick questions about GST and GSX models

hey there i have a honda prelude at the moment but this summer i will probably work up a couple grand and I might sell the 'lude and have a good 7 or 8 grand towards a newer car. It's probably a bad idea to ask questions like these in a biased eclipse forum but honestly can you answer these questions. thanks a bunch

differences between GST and GSX, why are GSX so rare?
about how many miles do they run strong before having alot of trouble?
any years i should stay away from?
any common problems they have?
how expensive is it to upgrade the turbo setup?
mpg?
stock top speed?
stock weight?
stock hp/torque?
stock 0-60?
stock, are they slower or faster than the 3000GT VR-4

The gs-t is front wheel drive, the gsx is all wheel. Some options are more commonly found on the gsx. The gsx is rare because of supply and demand. Not as many were sold, and they're the most coveted. AWD is an advantage. And people like to own the "best" of everything. They'll run well as long as they're taken care of, no magic number when things slide downhill. The year to year changes were few, in assuming you're looking for a second gen, at least. 95's have eprom based ecu's, which is nice. Early 95's have vented rotors. 99's are the most expensive.

The most common problem is disregarding maintenance. Not replacing the timing belt is bad, for example. You'll hear talk of crankwalk, it's not common. A new turbo is much cheaper on a dsm than on a Prelude. A turbo that will get you 350whp will cost 500 dollars new. You still need supporting mods, like fuel support and tuning.

Mpg, not so hot. There's a discussion about this right now on this page of the board. On the turbo models, not much more than 20. Top speed, no idea. The gst is electonically limited to 130ish. That can be removed. Weight is 3200 pounds. Hp is 210, torque is about the same. Stock, slower than a vr-4. Keep in mind, you're asking questions about stock performance when no one drives these cars stock For three thosand dollars, plus the cost of the gsx, you could run 12's.

You're asking good questions, but many of them can be answered via the faq that says "read before posting." One of the links in there in particular, 1000aaq, may help you out a bit. Good luck.

wow, where to start....

difference between gst and gsx - gsx is AWD

miles depend on how they were maintained and mods, how it was driven

no years to really stay away from, just different body styles and options
many people favor the 6 bolt motor in the 1g's, and often swap them into the 2 g's

not all that expensive to upgrade the turbo and that, depends on how big you wanna go

common problems....belt squeels are one, mostly just basic shit with any normal car
you will eventually hear about crankwalk, but don't think about it too much its not common at all

mpg - anywhere from as low as 20 to as high was 28-30, depends on the setup and how you drive it, many other factors.

all the hp and shit like that you can search and find, im too lazy to do it for you

no, a stock 3000gt VR4 would smoke a stock gst or gsx, but eclipses are cheaper to make faster

to add to the common problems list....

transmission - 2nd gear synchro likes to be shredded into shit. sucks driving next to a hot chick in a srt-4 or somethin and have her hear you grind 2nd

clutch - stock clutches are shitty. they CAN take a beating, but don't expect them to last very long if you beat on them. they like to chatter after a while. also the master cylinder. if one of the seals ever go bad, you'll have a 'ghost pedal'. (pedal sinks all by itself with light pressure applied). stock t/o bearings are excellent.

engine - CW (crankwalk) isn't as common as a lot of people think. i HAVE had it, though. first week i had my car, motor was shot due to cw. wish i would have know about cw back then also, lifter tap is annoying. a heavier, full synthetic oil can help this. use lucas treatment and it's almost eliminated. umm, as for oil leaks...there is something wrong with your eclipse if it DOESN"T have an oil leak lol. every dsm i've seen has at least one lol. mmmmm, nothing else to really note on the motor. just take good care of it. do regular maintnence, change oil every 3k, etc etc you'll be fine.

other than that, these cars are excellent. there are also a lot of free mods you can do by yourself to help with performance. all in all hp is pretty cheap for these cars.

thanks to everybody who responded, i really want a GSX now but a GST would be awesome anyways, ill have to see what comes along this summer

Um, well, they also came out with, ahem, the eclipse Spyder, just so you know...it's available in GS-T and a non turbo 2.4, but no AWD... which is just fine with me. I'm on my second spyder, and I'm absolutely lovin it. AWD isn't as important to me as having a retractable top is (lol, CA weather, can you blame me?)... it's not all about being the fastest rocket on the road for me. Anywas, the point is, if you eventually for whatever reason intent on getting a GS-T instead of a GSX, get a GS-T Spyder while your on it...





(my sales pitch any good?)
