spirit transmission questions

ok, i need some serious help since none of the auto shops can answer them for me around my house. I'm pretty sure it's a transmision problem because it slips sometimes and doesnt always like to shift gears but instead it will continue to stay in that gear while continuing to go faster. Also, sometimes my car likes to go in reverse when put into drive. My question is : Do yo u have to fix the entire transmision or is there a way to fix only part of it?

Re: spirit transmission questions

Recently, a simular problem to yours may relate to your problem of delayed shifting. My parents car would automatically upshift or downshift 1-2 at 25 MPH and 2-3 at 42 MPH. THis was causing runing in 2'nd gear most of the time around town and poor gas mileage.

The CES light was out, but the computer had stored the cryptic code 37 (torque converter lockup solonoid problem). This code basically means the transmission has seen a problem shifting. The solonoid refered to is internal to the transmission and is how the computer electronically shifts gears.

My parents problem turned out to be that a transmision throttle cable (a seperate cable from the throttle cable to the engine, but also attached to the gas petal) wasn't operating. (It may have fallen off the gas pedal) I believe this cable tells the transmission the engine speed in some way probably for upshifts and kickdown purposes. The mechanic who looked at the car immediately knew what the problem was and simply reattached and oiled the cable.
