car stereo adaptation

This isn't really so much a car question as it is a question about something that goes in a car. I have an extra car stereo and i would like to set it up in my garage. Is it possible to use one of the small ac adapters with mutliple settings and use it for a power source for the stereo? I'm talking one of these small adapters that you would use for a walkman or stereo. it has a setting for 12V and i planned on cutting the end off and wiring it to the stereo. Before i do this and burn down my house or destroy the stereo i'd like to make sure it will work. I also plan on using regular house speakers. Does any of this sound feasible? If it's going to start costing lots of money then i'll just buy a stereo. I just hate having stuff lying around that works. I appreciate the help.
