Can't find the daignostic slot to diagnose my check engine codes
I just got a '98 Metro. From reading on this forum, (I searched) I understand there is a raised place to insert a fuse to make your light flash the codes. I looked tonight and cannot find a raised slot. There are only two empty ones and I tried both of them and they didn't do it.
Is it different on a '98 than other years, perhaps? The fusebox is white, and if I pop the cover off, I see a long row and a short row of the small style blade fuses, along with several harness connectors plugged into various spots. It was hard to get twisted around so I could see and get my hands in there at the same time, but it looked like there were clips along the bottom of the fusebox. Is there a second layer with more fuses below the first ones I described? I need to get a Haynes manual, but I just got it and haven't had time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I need some help too. 2001 1.0, 140,000 miles and in great shape. I have always bragged about only having to change oil but today it would not start. Check engine is not blinking but I can not jump the code reader. Is there a fuse slot that reads the code. PLEASE HELP!

Re: Can't find the daignostic fuse receptacle to check my check engine codes
I have a Haynes manual, but it only goes to 1994. I don't know if they changed it or not, but from 1989 to 1994 the the ECM is located on the fuseblock under the dash board. It says engine needs to be at normal operating temp.On my 1992 it is a raised area on the fuse block. I am afraid I don't have the proper codes to trouble shoot your newer cars. Hope this helps. I would suggest going to the auto parts store an investing some money it a haynes manual for your years. They have proper procedures on how to read the codes and are a wealth of information on almost all your basic repairs.

Re: Can't find the daignostic fuse receptacle to check my check engine codes
I am pretty sure your cars are OBD II that means you will need a code reader thats plugs into a port or receptacle under your dash, However, I could be wrong since I own a 1994!

Thanks for the info.
![]() I thought the OBDII ones were the ones you could read the codes with the diagnostic fuse. I guess I do need to get the Haynes manual. Money is tight, I was just hoping to put it off for a bit. Good luck with your problems, krog. |

Re: Can't find the daignostic fuse receptacle to check my check engine codes
Yeah, to confirm, the 98 Metro is OBDII (ISO format) and you do need a code reader for it. They're readily available at www.scantool.net for relatively cheap and these can view and clear codes on OBDII systems.
